A dog adopted by the soldiers at Gardez FOB, 60 miles south of Kabul chews contentedly on a soup bone. Strays are sometimes taken in by soldiers on smaller bases because they can be good guard dogs, especially during pitch dark nights, and are sympathetic companions in secluded locales.
